India’s First-ever Open-sea Marine Fish Farming

  • In January 2026, Union government launched India’s first-ever open-sea Marine Fish Farming project from the Andaman Sea.
  • It is first pilot open-sea aquaculture initiative involving marine finfish and seaweed farming in natural oceanic conditions using indigenously developed open-sea cages and marine technologies.
  • It aims to unlock ocean-based economic potential, generate sustainable coastal livelihoods, and build technical feasibility for scaling open-sea aquaculture under India’s Blue Economy vision.
