Integrated Air Defence Weapon System

On August 23, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the first flight test of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha.

  • IADWS is a multi-layered air defence system, developed entirely with indigenous technology.
  • It comprises three major components:
    • Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) – for medium-range defence.
    • Advanced Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) – for close-range protection.
    • High-Power Laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) – a futuristic weapon system that destroys targets directly with a laser beam without launching a missile.
