Man-Portable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (MP-AUVs)
In November 2025, India’s DRDO, through the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam, developed and successfully tested a new generation of Man-portable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (MP-AUVs).
- These vehicles are designed for sub-surface surveillance in potentially mined waters. They carry side-scan sonar and underwater cameras for real-time detection, localisation, classification and imaging of underwater objects.
- A man-portable system means it can be transported, launched and recovered by a small team, making it suitable for littoral waters, harbour approaches and shallow-sea operations. This improves rapid deployment in coastal security missions.
