Poverty and Equity Brief Report of World Bank
In April 2025, the World Bank released the Poverty and Equity Briefs (PEBs), highlighting that India has successfully lifted 171 million people out of extreme poverty. (Source: World Bank PEB April 2025).
Poverty Reduction and International Benchmarks
- Extreme poverty at the 2.15 USD benchmark declined sharply from 16.2% to 2.3% between 2011 and 2023.
- Rural poverty fell to 2.8%, narrowing the gap with urban centers which recorded a 1.1% poverty rate.
- The five most populous states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, contributed two-thirds of India's total poverty reduction.
