PRATUSH Telescope (Lunar Radio Astronomy)

In September 2025, researchers at the Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru, developed a laboratory model of a digital receiver system for PRATUSH.

  • PRATUSH stands for Probing ReionizATion of the Universe using Signal from Hydrogen.
    • It is designed to observe the 21-cm hydrogen line signal from the early Universe.
  • The telescope will be deployed on the lunar far side, which is naturally shielded from Earth’s radio-frequency interference (RFI), providing a radio-quiet environment.
  • It aims to study the “Dark Ages” of the Universe, the period after the Big Bang and before the formation of the first stars.
