Project 17A Stealth Frigates – Udaygiri & Himgiri

Under Project 17A, seven stealth guided-missile frigates are being constructed to enhance naval combat capabilities.

  • Four frigates are being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai, and three at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata.
  • All seven ships were launched between 2019 and 2023 and are scheduled for induction during 2024–2026.
  • The first ship, INS Nilgiri, was commissioned on 15 January 2025, marking the beginning of inductions.
  • INS Udaygiri was handed over to the Indian Navy on 1 July 2025.
  • Udaygiri is a modern reincarnation of the earlier INS Udaygiri, decommissioned in 2007 after long service.
