Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026
- The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, on January 28, 2026, aiming to transform India into a garbage-free nation.
- Effective from April 1, 2026, these rules replace the 2016 framework to address the public health risks posed by mounting urban waste.
Provisions
- A mandatory "four-stream" segregation system requires citizens to separate waste into wet, dry, sanitary, and special-care categories at the source.
- The "Extended Bulk Waste Generator Responsibility" (EBWGR) ensures that large residential and commercial complexes legally manage their own environmental footprint.
