SPHEREx Mission
In February 2026, NASA’s SPHEREx mission turned its infrared gaze on interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS recently, adding to the deep pool of information the agency has gathered on what is only the third such object to be discovered passing through our solar system.
- SPHEREx was launched on 11 March 2025 as a NASA space observatory to conduct the first all-sky spectroscopic survey in the near-infrared.
- The full form is Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer.
- The mission has a planned duration of two years and will map the entire sky four times.
