State Mining Readiness Index
- In October 2025, the Ministry of Mines released the inaugural State Mining Readiness Index (SMRI) to evaluate state-level performance in the non-coal mineral sector.
- The SMRI evaluates states on auction performance, mine operationalisation, exploration thrust, and sustainable mining practices.
- States are classified into three categories based on their mineral endowment to ensure a fair comparison.
- Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat secured the top positions in Category A for mineral-rich Indian states.
- Auction performance tracks the efficiency and transparency of mineral block allocation to ensure competitive participation.
- Mine operationalisation measures the speed of transitioning from an auctioned block to a functional production unit.
