Steps towards Banning Polygamy
In December 2025, the Chief Minister of Assam introduced the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 in the State Assembly to criminalize the practice.
Provisions of the Assam Anti-Polygamy Bill
- The Bill prescribes imprisonment up to seven years for entering a second marriage while the first remains legally valid.
- It excludes Sixth Schedule areas and Scheduled Tribes under Article 342 where customary laws traditionally permit polygamous practices.
- Convicted individuals face ineligibility for government jobs, state benefits, and are barred from contesting various local body elections.
