Sundarbans Becomes India’s Second Largest Tiger Reserve
On 19 August 2025, the National Board for Wildlife approved the proposal of the West Bengal government to expand the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve.
- The reserve area has been increased by approximately 1,044.68 square kilometres, taking its total area to about 3,629.57 square kilometres.
- The expansion includes the incorporation of three tiger-inhabited forest ranges, namely Matla, Raidighi, and Ramganga, located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
- With this expansion, the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve has become the second-largest tiger reserve in India.
- It now ranks after the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, which remains the largest tiger reserve in the country.
