Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)

  • On 4th Aug 2025, the Supreme Court, in a significant judgment, upheld the right of Pollution Control Boards to recover compensation and damages in order to prevent potential environmental harm.
  • Established: Under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 in September.
  • Later empowered under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.
  • Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
  • Functions: Prevention of air and water pollution, and advising the central government on related matters.
  • State governments have also constituted State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) under the same Acts.
