Daruma Doll
Recently, during his visit to Japan, PM Narendra Modi received a Daruma Doll from chief priest of Shorinzan Daruma-Ji Temple.
What is Daruma doll?
- The Daruma is a traditional Japanese wish doll, which is typically made of papier-mâché.
- This doll is a representation of Bodhidharma, or Daruma in Japanese, the fifth-century monk who is credited with founding Zen Buddhism.
- The doll represents the popular Japanese proverb ‘Nana korobi ya oki,’ which translates to ‘fall seven times, get up eight,’ representing the power of resilience.
