Sarnath Nominated for UNESCO World Heritage List

On 4th August 2025, India submitted a dossier titled “Ancient Buddhist Site, Sarnath” to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for consideration in the 2025–26 nomination cycle.

Brief Description on Sarnath

  • Location: Situated near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is one of Buddhism’s holiest sites.

Historical and Religious Significance

  • First Sermon of Buddha: It is where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dhammachakkappavattana) after attaining enlightenment.
  • Ancient Name: Known in ancient texts as Rishipatana, Mrigadava, and Mrigadaya. The name Sarnath likely derives from Saranganatha (“Lord of the Deer”).
