Toll Collection Reforms
On August 12, 2025, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) submitted a report highlighting major flaws in toll collection practices on National Highways (NHs), in the Parliament.
Key Issues Identified by PAC
Concerns over Perpetual Tolling
- Toll collection continues indefinitely, even after recovery of project cost and operation & maintenance (O&M) expenses.
- Toll rates increase automatically through a 3% annual hike plus 40% of WPI inflation adjustment.
FASTag-Related Issues
- Despite 98% penetration, congestion persists due to malfunctioning radio-frequency identification scanners.
