Blue Bond
India is preparing for its first dedicated blue bond issues, with Sagarmala Finance Corporation and Vadodara Municipal Corporation seeking a combined Rs. 1,200 crore.
- The funds could support ports, waterways and urban water-management systems, while testing investor appetite for this emerging asset class.
Understanding Blue Bond
- Definition: According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), blue bonds are debt instruments whose proceeds are earmarked for oceans, marine ecosystems, water management and sustainable blue-economy projects.
- Working: Like green bonds, investors provide capital in return for interest and repayment of principal at maturity.
- Eligible Activities: Financing may support:
- Marine Conservation: Protection and restoration of marine ecosystems.
