GOBARdhan: Fuelling Clean Energy and Rural Growth

On 6th August 2026, the Union Cabinet approved GOBARdhan, the National Circular Bioenergy Scheme.

How is it Different from the Earlier GOBARdhan Scheme?

  • Earlier GOBARdhan Scheme (2018)
    • Launched under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) as part of Solid and Liquid Waste Management.
    • Focused on converting animal waste, kitchen waste, crop residue and market waste into biogas and bio-slurry.
    • Primarily aimed at rural sanitation, waste management and livelihood generation.
  • Reformed Approach
    • The Compressed Biogas (CBG) ecosystem, earlier managed across four different Ministries, has been consolidated under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
