NASA’s Lucy Mission to Explore Trojan Asteroids
On 16th October, 2021, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched the Lucy Mission to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids.
Trojans
- These are two large clusters of asteroids that circle the Sun in two swarms: one that precedes and one that follows Jupiter in its orbit of the Sun.
- Called “Trojans” after characters from Greek mythology, most of Lucy’s target asteroids are left over from the formation of the solar system, effectively fossils of planet formation.
