MOF Material Removes Tritium Efficiently
Recently, researchers developed a Metal- Organic Framework (MOF)-based material that can efficiently separate tritium from radioactive wastewater, offering a potential solution for managing wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Why is Tritium Removal Difficult?
Tritiated Water
- Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen.
- It combines with oxygen to form tritiated water (HTO).
- HTO behaves almost identically to ordinary water, making separation extremely difficult.
Existing Method
- Tritium is currently removed mainly through water distillation.
- The process requires very tall distillation towers and consumes large amounts of energy.
