Indian Researchers Develop Placenta-on-Chip
In July 2026, researchers from the ICMR-National Institute for Research on Women's Health (ICMR-NIRWoH) and IIT Bombay developed a Placenta-on-Chip, a human cell-based laboratory model that closely mimics the structure and function of the human placenta.
Key Highlights
- Mimics Human Placenta: The device mimics the structural, cellular, hormonal and functional characteristics of the human placenta.
- Laboratory Platform: It provides a laboratory platform to study the movement of drugs, nutrients, pollutants and infectious agents across the placental barrier.
- Less Animal Testing: The model could reduce dependence on animal testing, which often does not accurately represent human pregnancy.
