Chemists Synthesize Unique Fluorine Compound
Recently, a team of researchers achieved a groundbreaking feat with the synthesis of an unprecedented interhalogen compound featuring a central fluorine atom coordinated by four BrF5 groups.
- This pioneering achievement marks the first instance of a tetracoordinated fluorine atom bridging to neither metal nor hydrogen atoms, representing a significant advancement in chemical synthesis.
- Previous knowledge of tetracoordinated fluorine atoms was limited to ionic compounds like CaF2, while µ4-fluorine atoms were found in specific molecular configurations.
- Building upon their prior work, the team successfully synthesized the interhalogen ion [Br4F21]–, employing a sterically demanding [NMe4]+ counter ion.
- Halogen fluorides are renowned ....
