India Designates Five New Ramsar Sites
Recently, Union Environment Minister announced that five more Indian wetlands have been added to the global list of wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Expanding Ramsar Sites in India
- With the five new additions, India has increased its Ramsar sites from 75 to 80. Ankasamudra Bird Conservation Reserve, Aghanashini Estuary, and Magadi Kere Conservation Reserve in Karnataka, along with Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary and Longwood Shola Reserve Forest in Tamil Nadu are the new additions.
- The addition of these wetlands increases the total area under Ramsar protection to 1.33 million hectares, showcasing India's dedication to preserving these vital ecosystems.
