Rare Lapwing Sighted in India
On 18th February, 2024, a birdwatching expedition in Telangana led to a remarkable discovery near Warangal — a spur-winged lapwing, believed to be the first sighting of its kind in India.
- The elusive wader bird, scientifically known as Vanellus spinosus, was observed near Bhattupalle village.
- The spur-winged lapwing is typically found in North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, making its appearance in the Indian subcontinent unprecedented.
- Initially mistaken for a river lapwing due to its habitat, closer examination of the bird's physical characteristics, call, and flight behaviour revealed its distinctiveness, as confirmed by expert birders.
