AviList: World’s First Unified Global Bird Checklist Launched
On 12th June 2025, AviList, the first-ever unified global checklist of bird species, went live after four years of work by the Working Group on Avian Checklists, marking a landmark moment for global bird conservation.
What Is AviList?
- A comprehensive global bird taxonomy database designed to standardize how bird species are classified and listed.
- Replaces previous systems like the International Ornithological Committee (IOC) and Clements checklists.
- Will be updated annually to reflect the latest scientific consensus.
- Developed by a team from BirdLife International, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, American Ornithologists Society, International Ornithologists’ Union, and Avibase.
