Rajasthan’s Khichan and Menar Wetlands Declared Ramsar Sites

On 4th June 2025, Khichan in Phalodi and Menar in Udaipur were declared Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, taking India’s total Ramsar sites to 91.

Menar Wetland Complex

  • Location: Udaipur, Rajasthan.
  • Type: Freshwater monsoon wetland complex formed by Braham talab, Dhand talab, Kheroda talab, and connecting farmland.

Biodiversity:

  • 110 species of waterbirds, 67 of them migratory.
  • Critically endangered white-rumped and long-billed vultures.
  • 70+ plant species; mango trees support Indian flying fox colonies.

Khichan Wetland

  • Location: Phalodi, in the northern Thar Desert.
  • Ecosystem: Includes Ratri nadi, Vijaysagar talab, riparian habitats, and scrubland.

Birdlife:

  • Over 150 bird species recorded.
