UN Ocean Conference 2025: Countries Adopt ‘Nice Ocean Action Plan’
The 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, held in Nice from 9 to 13 June, concluded with over 170 countries adopting a political declaration, titled “Our ocean, our future: united for urgent action.”
- The declaration forms the Nice Ocean Action Plan, aimed at accelerating global efforts to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.
Key Outcomes
- Reaffirmed target to protect 30% of oceans by 2030 (under Kunming-Montreal Framework).
- Marine Biodiversity Treaty (BBNJ Agreement) ratification reaches 50 countries.
- €1 billion EU fund announced for marine protection and sustainable fisheries.
- Indonesia & World Bank launch Coral Bond to finance reef restoration.
- French Polynesia declares entire EEZ (5 million sq.km) ....
