National Red List Assessment: India’s New Conservation Initiative

On 9th October 2025, India launched the National Red List Assessment initiative, aiming for a science-based, equitable and people-centred approach to conserving the country’s flora and fauna by 2030.

What is the National Red List Assessment?

  • It is a nationwide effort to document and assess approximately 11,000 species of flora and fauna — 7,000 plant species and 4,000 animal species.
  • The initiative is part of India’s commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).
