Digital Arrest and Its Science
- Digital arrest scams are online frauds where scammers use technology to intimidate victims and falsely accuse them of illegal activities. They then demand money and pressure victims to pay.
- In the first quarter of 2024 (January-April), the common people of India lost Rs.120.3 crore due to digital arrest incidents.
- Between January 1 and April 30, 2024, 7.4 lakh cybercrime complaints were registered in India.
- In 2021, 4.52 lakh cybercrime complaints were registered, followed by 9.6 lakh in 2022 and 15.16 lakh in 2023.
- The National Crime Records Bureau found that most cybercriminals are based in South Asian countries like Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
