India’s Biosecurity Imperatives: Securing Health and the Nation
The international conference on ‘50 Years of Biological Weapons Conventio (BWC): Strengthening Biosecurity for the Global South’, was organised by the Ministry of External Affairs on 1-2 December 2025 in New Delhi to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of BWC.
- Rapid advances in biotechnology, genetic engineering, and synthetic biology have enhanced human capacity to understand and manipulate biological systems.
- While these developments have transformed healthcare, agriculture, and industry, they have also increased the risk of misuse of biological agents.
- In this context, strengthening biosecurity has emerged as a critical policy priority for states.
