G20 Summit: High Ambition, Weak Cohesion

Defying U.S. resistance, G20 leaders in Johannesburg (G20 Summit; 22-23 November 2025) adopted a landmark declaration centred on climate action, global equity, and multilateral reform.

Key Outcomes

  • Africa-Centred Multilateralism: First G20 Summit in Africa acknowledged; Ubuntu philosophy highlighted. Leaders reaffirmed collective action and multilateral cooperation.
  • Greater African Voice in Global Finance: IMF adds a 25th Executive Board chair for Sub-Saharan Africa. SDR rechanneling crossed $100 billion to support vulnerable economies.
  • Stronger Debt Sustainability Framework: Renewed push for predictable, timely G20 Common Framework implementation. Support for debt-for-climate/development swaps and improved debt transparency.
