NHRC Faces Accreditation Deferral by UN-Affiliated Body
In May 2024, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India was denied accreditation by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) for the second year running, affecting its representation and voting rights at the UN Human Rights Council.
- The delay raises concerns about NHRC's independence, competence and fairness, given its inability to meet the accreditation standards set by GANHRI.
Consequences of Losing Accreditation
- 'A' status NHRIs can actively participate in UN bodies and GANHRI, while 'B' status institutions have limited rights.
- NHRC's loss of accreditation restricts representation at the UN Human Rights Council and governance positions.
