In May 2025, the Liberian-flagged MSC ELSA 3 sank approximately 25 km off the coast of Alappuzha while en route from Vizhinjam to Kochi. Authorities are monitoring the site amid fears of an oil spill that could impact Kerala’s marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
