Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate (PBAT)
- On 21st May 2025, Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat in Tripura introduced compostable bags made from PBAT, a biodegradable and chemical-free polymer, as a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic bags.
- PBAT (Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate) is a biodegradable thermoplastic polymer used as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastics.
- It is a copolymer of adipic acid, 1,4-butanediol, and terephthalic acid, and can be processed using standard plastic manufacturing techniques.
- PBAT is commonly blended with other biopolymers to improve its mechanical strength and barrier properties.
