IMD Launches AI-Based Weather Forecasting Products
On 12th May 2026, the India Meteorological Department launched two advanced Artificial Intelligence-based weather forecasting products for rain-fed agricultural regions.
- The AI-driven forecasting services will be operational from the upcoming monsoon season and aim to improve rainfall prediction accuracy and localisation.
- National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, has been introduced as a pilot project for Uttar Pradesh.
- The system provides rainfall forecasts with a spatial resolution of up to 1 kilometre and a lead time of up to 10 days using AI-based downscaling techniques.
- Another AI-driven rainfall forecasting system was developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune.
