State and Trends of Carbon Pricing 2026
On 19th May 2026, the World Bank Group released the report “State and Trends of Carbon Pricing 2026”, highlighting that India emerged as one of the world’s largest new carbon markets after launching its Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) in 2026.
What is Carbon Pricing?
- It is an economic mechanism that puts a price on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
- Main instruments include: Carbon taxes, and Emissions Trading Systems (ETS).
Objective
- Encourage industries to reduce carbon emissions and shift toward cleaner technologies.
India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS)
- Introduced in 2026
- Covers: Seven industrial sectors with around 490 industries.
