VFTS 243

VFTS 243 is the name given to a binary system of a recently discovered black hole and an extremely luminous and hot blue star with a mass about 25 times that of the sun. The star and the black hole orbit together.

  • The black hole is not only classified as dormant but appears to have been born without the explosion of a dying star. It differs from all other known black holes in that it is “X-ray quiet” – meaning it does not emit powerful X-ray radiation.
  • It was detected in the Tarantula Nebula region of the Large Magellanic Cloud ....
