Shiitake Mushroom
- Shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) is an edible fungus native to Japan and China.
- It is the second most consumed mushroom in the world after 'Button' mushroom.
- Shiitake mushroom is often called the 'elixir of life' and is also known as the 'fragrant mushroom'.
- It is considered a medicinal mushroom in some forms of traditional medicine. 'Lentinan' and other chemicals present in shiitake mushrooms are capable of stimulating the immune system.
- Some studies show that the 'polysaccharide lentinan' present in it can be beneficial against cancer and other diseases.
