CMS COP15 Expands Protection for Migratory Species
On 29th March 2026, the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP15) concluded in Campo Grande, Brazil, marking progress in the global protection of migratory species, their routes, and habitats.
- At the conference, 40 migratory species, including birds, aquatic, and terrestrial animals, were added to the protected lists.
What is the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)?
- A UN-backed international treaty (1979) for conserving migratory species.
- Also known as the Bonn Convention.
- Focuses on species that cross national borders.
- Promotes global cooperation for conservation.
- Covers terrestrial, avian and marine migratory species.
