UNSC Resolution on Strait of Hormuz Vetoed by Russia and China
On 7th April 2026, a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution on securing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz was vetoed by Russia and China, despite receiving majority support.

- Draft resolution proposed by Bahrain.
- Aimed at ensuring safe maritime navigation.
- Encouraged defensive coordination among nations.
- Failed due to veto by Russia and China.
Voting Outcome
- 11 members voted in favour.
- 2 opposed: Russia and China; 2 abstained.
- Failed as permanent members used veto power.
Why Was the Resolution Proposed?
- Rising tensions in West Asia conflict.
- Iran accused of restricting Strait of Hormuz.
- Disruption to:
- Global oil supply, and
- Trade and humanitarian shipments.
