Kalai-II Hydropower Project and EIA Concerns in Lohit Basin
Recently, the Union Environment Ministry’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) recommended environmental clearance for the 1,200-MW Kalai-II hydropower project on the Lohit River in Arunachal Pradesh.
- The recommendation was made despite objections regarding the omission of the critically endangered White-bellied Heron from the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
Omission of Critically Endangered Species in EIA
- The EIA report does not mention the White-bellied Heron, a Schedule-I species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
- The heron relies on free-flowing, low-disturbance riverine habitats and rapids for feeding, making it highly vulnerable ....
