Regulation of Exotic Animal Trade
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) on June 1, 2020, issued an advisory to streamline and formalise the process of importing live exotic animals.
New Rules
- Earlier it was Directorate-General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce, that oversaw such trade. Now Environment Ministry’s wildlife division has been made in-charge.
- Owners and possessors of such animals and birds have to register their stock with the Chief Wildlife Warden of their States.
- The importer will also have to attach a No Objection Certificate (NOC) of the chief wildlife warden of the state concerned along with the application.
