Expansion of BRICS
During the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, there was a significant expansion of the group.
- In addition to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, invitations were extended to six additional nations.
- These newly invited countries comprise Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from West Asia, Egypt and Ethiopia from Africa, and Argentina from Latin America.
- On 1 January 2024, BRICS admitted four new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
- Despite initial plans, Argentina, under President Javier Milei, decided to withdraw from joining the expanding BRICS club.
