The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 received the assent of the President on 25th December, 2023. It will come into effect from July 1, 2024.
- The Act repeals the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC) and defines terrorism and related offences, consolidating them under one law.
- The Act proposes 10 years imprisonment for deceiving women with false promises of marriage.
- Sedition is no longer an offence.Instead, there is a new offence for acts endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.
- Additionally, it introduces community service as punishment for certain crimes to aid offender rehabilitation and prison decongestion.
