Asia’s Largest Cherenkov Telescope in Ladakh
On October 4, 2024, India inaugurated the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) Observatory at Hanle, Ladakh.
- Inaugurated by Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Department Of Atomic Energy (DAE) & Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission.
- MACE is Asia’s largest imaging Cherenkov telescope.
- Located at an altitude of ~4,300 m, making it the highest of its kind in the world.
- It is the second-largest gamma-ray telescope globally.
- Built by Electronics Corporation of India, Hyderabad, for the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
- The telescope will enhance research in astrophysics, fundamental physics, and particle acceleration mechanisms.
Technical Specifications
- A 180-ton structure moving on a 27-meter-diameter track supported by six wheels.
