India Eliminates Trachoma as a Public Health Problem
On October 8, 2024, the World Health Organisation (WHO) officially certified India for eliminating Trachoma as a public health problem.
- Cause: Bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
- Transmission: Spreads through contact with eye secretions of infected individuals, contaminated personal items (towels, pillows), houseflies, and respiratory droplets.
- Risk Factors: Poor hygiene, overcrowding, water shortages, and inadequate sanitation.
- Advanced Condition: Trachomatous trichiasis, a painful condition where eyelashes scrape the eyeball, leading to blindness.
- 2005: Trachoma-related blindness dropped to 4%.
- 2018: Reduced further to 0.008%.
- 2024: WHO officially recognized India as a trachoma-free nation, following impact assessments and trichiasis surveys.
