India’s First Wildlife Biobank

India’s first zoo-based wildlife Biobank and animal museum set up at Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP), Darjeeling (now operational in February, 2025).

  • It was developed in collaboration with Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Ministry of Science & Technology.
  • The park stores DNA, tissues, reproductive cells (even from deceased animals); 60 samples from 23 species collected so far.
  • Known as ‘Frozen Zoo’, it uses cryogenic storage at -196°C for long-term preservation.
  • Supports conservation research, assisted reproduction, and species revival.
  • PNHZP is known for Red Panda breeding and was renamed in 1975 in memory of Smt. Padmaja Naidu ....
