ISRO Develops Indigenous Microprocessors for Space Applications
On 15th March 2025, ISRO announced the successful development of VIKRAM3201 and KALPANA3201, India’s first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessors designed for space applications.
Breakthrough in Space-Grade Microprocessors
- VIKRAM3201 is the first Make-in-India 32-bit microprocessor, built using 180nm CMOS fabrication at SCL, Chandigarh.
- It is an advanced version of VIKRAM1601, a 16-bit processor used in ISRO’s launch vehicles since 2009.
- KALPANA3201 is a 32-bit SPARC V8 RISC microprocessor, compatible with IEEE 1754 Instruction Set Architecture and open-source software toolsets.
- These processors are designed for high-reliability applications in navigation, guidance, and control of launch vehicles.
