NASA’s Parker Solar Probe Sets Record
On December 24, 2024, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe became the closest human-made object to the Sun, flying within 3.8 million miles at a speed of 430,000 mph and enduring temperatures up to 982°C.
- It was launched in 2018; the mission studies the Sun’s outer atmosphere (corona), the origin of solar winds, plasma dynamics, and particle acceleration.
- The probe’s findings help predict solar storms and protect Earth’s communication and satellite systems.
