NHRC: GANHRI Accreditation Deferred

The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) in April 2024 deferred the accreditation of the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRCI) for the second consecutive year.

Key Highlights

  • GANHRI conducts a peer-reviewed accreditation process to ensure compliance with the Paris Principles (independence, pluralism, accountability).
  • National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) are reviewed every five years by the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) and categorized as:
    • ‘A’ status – Fully compliant
    • ‘B’ status – Partially compliant
  • NHRCI was first accredited ‘A’ in 1999, faced deferment in 2016, re-accredited in 2017, but faced deferment again in 2023 due to concerns over:
