Soil Health in India

In July 2024, at the International Conference on Soils in Morocco, UNESCO pledged to establish a World Soil Health Index in collaboration with international partners.

Key Objectives of the Index

  • Standardized assessment of soil quality.
  • Identification of degradation trends and risk areas.
  • Support for sustainable soil and landscape management.
  • Pilot program in 10 natural sites under UNESCO's Biosphere Reserves Programme.

Global Soil Degradation

  • 75% of global soils are degraded, affecting 3.2 billion people.
  • By 2050, 90% of soils may be degraded (World Atlas of Desertification).

India’s Soil Degradation Scenario

  • 96.4 million hectares (29.32% of total land) are degraded (ISRO, 2021).
  • Key Causes: Deforestation, salinization, monoculture ....
