Soil Health in India
In July 2024, at the International Conference on Soils in Morocco, UNESCO pledged to establish a World Soil Health Index in collaboration with international partners.
Key Objectives of the Index
- Standardized assessment of soil quality.
- Identification of degradation trends and risk areas.
- Support for sustainable soil and landscape management.
- Pilot program in 10 natural sites under UNESCO's Biosphere Reserves Programme.
Global Soil Degradation
- 75% of global soils are degraded, affecting 3.2 billion people.
- By 2050, 90% of soils may be degraded (World Atlas of Desertification).
India’s Soil Degradation Scenario
- 96.4 million hectares (29.32% of total land) are degraded (ISRO, 2021).
- Key Causes: Deforestation, salinization, monoculture ....
